Erik Vincent and Oliver Ownbey represented Valdez High School at the AASG Spring Conference April 18-21. While at the conference, they had the opportunity to meet with other students from around the state to discuss state and local issues that they feel affect them most. Resolutions about those issues are presented, debated, and voted on by the AASG general assembly. Erik and Oliver were both active participants in debating and amending these resolutions. Sen. Lisa Murkowski also zoomed in from D.C. and Erik had the chance to ask her about her thoughts on being involved in local and state politics.
While in Utqiagvaik, all the delegates had the chance to take part in cultural activities, such as sewing, cooking, dancing, storytelling, and panels with elders and whaling captains. We also had the chance to visit the Inupiaq Heritage Center and Ilisagvik College. It was also an experience being in a rural community so different from Valdez. Both Erik and Oliver said it was a great trip and they enjoyed their time in Utqiagvik. The AASG Fall Conference will be October 11-3 in Delta Junction.
