Out of State Anglers Win Weekly Halibut Honors
VALDEZ – Two out of state anglers will be sporting the Valdez Fish Derbies fleece coat signifying they are winners in the Valdez Halibut Derby. Craig Rising of Phoenix, Arizona captured the 1st place weekly prize in the Valdez Halibut Derby last week with a 138.6 pound halibut caught aboard the Otter Dodger. Lois Ogle of Medford, Wisconsin captured the 2nd place weekly prize with a 131.3 pound halibut she caught aboard the private boat Circus Circus. The Valdez Halibut Derby week ends each Saturday night and it doesn’t always take a mammoth fish to win.
It will take a large fish to take home the $15,000 grand prize in the Valdez Halibut Derby though as someone will have to top the 275.6 pound halibut Marvin Ray Williams caught June 7th. Williams is leading the derby and John Pare is currently in 2nd place overall with a 203.1 pound halibut. Mike McDaneld is holding on to 3rd place overall with the 201.9 pound halibut he caught June 6th.
A large pink salmon return has been forecasted by the Valdez Fisheries Development Association, but the return is a bit later than usual. Upwards of 15 million pink salmon are slated to return according to Dave Cobb of the Valdez Fisheries Development Association and those pink salmon should be here in time for the Kids Pink Salmon Derby Saturday, July 18th. There are 4 age divisions for the Kids Derby: Age 5 to 7; 8 to 10; 11 to 13 and 14 to 16 with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes in each division. There is no cost or pre-registration. Angler just need to weigh-in a fish or check in at weigh in station if they don’t catch a fish to get door prize and free barbeque ticket. Kids Pink Salmon Derby weigh-in will run 10am to 5pm, Saturday July 18th at Valdez Fish Derbies weigh-in station with barbeque following at Dock Point. Barbeque is open to anglers and their family and fishing mates.
