As part of the Valdez Gold Rush Days celebration, there will be an art competition on Saturday, August 2nd at 12pm during the open air market. Artists will have one hour to draw a work of art before the items will be open for auction at 1:15pm. Benefits from the auction will benefit the Gold Rush Days Scholarship.

The 4th annual Gold Rush Days Cupcake Wars is almost here. The event is scheduled for Thursday, July 30th at the Senior Center. Set–up will be from 4 to 5pm and cupcake tasting and judging will follow from 5 – 7pm. In addition to the baking competition there will also be an ice cream social, free cupcake tasting and silent auction for the public. If you would like to participate in this event, a registration form must be filled out. Only 16 entries will be accepted and registration form and fee must be turned in to reserve your spot.

This Saturday, August 1st 2015
7pm – 10pm at the Civic Center
Cost: $60 per person (Must be 21 or older)

As part of Valdez’s annual Gold Rush Days celebration there will be a new event this year. Improv Night is described as dinner and a fast-paced comedy show that is all suggestion based. Two teams of Alaska’s finest “actletes” compete on stage in a race to the finish of this comedy marathon, based on suggestions made by the crowd throughout the night. The doors will open at 6:30pm with dinner set to begin at 7:00pm at the Civic Center, followed by the show at 8:00pm.  Advance ticket purchase is required.  Tickets are $60 per person, and will include dinner, two drink tickets and the show.  Attendants must be 21 or over to attend.​ Tickets will be available at A Rogue's Garden and the Gold Rush Days store.

The annual Gold Rush Days parade is scheduled for Sunday, August 2nd at 3pm on Egan Street.  This year's theme is "Go Take a Hike." The 2015 Relay For Life of Valdez Colors of Cancer Fun Run will be Saturday, July 25th. There will be a kid's one mile route, and a three or six mile route.  Registration begins at 10am at the Valdez High School parking lot. The one mile race starts at 10:30am and the three and six mile races begin at 11am.  The registration fees are $20 for adults, kids twelve and under are free. Participants can register and buy a shirt at the Eventbrite web site or in person on the day of the event. The event t-shirts are $10 for kid sizes or $12 for adult sizes.  Additional donations to The American Cancer Society can also be made online or in person. Volunteers are needed to splash color, make some noise along the route between the hospital and the salmon turnaround, and to help with registration. This fall, PWSCC is offering more options to make it easier to start taking classes, or to continue working while pursuing a degree.
PWSCC has expanded class offerings that meet after 5pm, including the following:
BA 151: Introduction to Business, ENVI 202/L: Introduction to Environmental Science, JUST 110: Introduction to Justice, SOC 101: Introduction to Sociology, SPAN 101: Elementary Spanish I, ART 100: Two Dimensional Activity with Faith Revell. PWSCC also introduced a Part-Time Student Scholarship to help offset costs for working students.

Gold Rush Ice Cream Social
Thursday, July 30th, 2015 from 5 pm to 7 pm

The public is welcome and encouraged to attend the Gold Rush Ice Cream Social on Thursday, July 30th from 5pm to 7pm. The Senior Center will also be hosting the Cupcake Wars Event which will include cupcake sampling and a chance to vote for the "people's choice award. Several exhibitors and judges will be in attendance to determine the winning cupcakes. The Hospital Auxiliary Board is partnering with the Senior Center as well to have a volunteer present to serve lemonade. Attendants are encouraged to dress in your finest Gold Rush garb, and ladies, don't forget to wear your hats. 

John Hozey Appreciation Lunch

Valdez Gold Rush Days is looking for contestants to perform in the upcoming Valdez Voice singing competition, during this year’s Gold Rush Days celebration 7:30pm, Thursday, July 30th at the Civic Center. This event is free and open to the public. Independence Day Parade
The Independence Day Parade is an opportunity for individuals, families, groups, businesses and organizations to show their patriotic spirit by participating in the parade with an entry or float. Pre‐registration is not mandatory, but is highly encouraged. Registration for the parade is free. There is no designated theme. Prizes for first, second and third place best entries will receive $100, $50 and $25, respectively. Line‐up begins at 11:30am and takes place on West Egan Drive.

Fairbanks Street Block Party
The Fairbanks Street Block Party on the 4th of July is open to the public and lasts from 12:30pm to 3pm. Vendors must pre-register no later than July 2nd at 3pm. The cost for vendors is $15. Vendors are responsible for all booth amenities, including tent coverage. Electricity may be available in limited quantities. Food vendors are required to have ADEC permits.

Canoe Jousting
Teams of two battle it out against each other for the championship. Each team has a paddler and a jouster. The paddler strategically maneuvers the canoe while the jouster uses a pugil stick to up‐end the opponent and their canoe. Pre‐registration is not required, but is highly encouraged. Competition is open to participants 16 and older. Participants under 18 must have adult permission. Canoes, life jackets and pugil sticks are provided. Participants must be able to swim, and have appropriate attire in case they fall in. Cajoe Jousting is free for participants and cash prizes will be awarded to 1st ‐ 4th Place. This is a great spectator event so please come watch and cheer on your favorite team even if you won’t be jousting. The event is held at Ruth Pond at the corner of Hazelet and Fidalgo.

The annual Valdez Gold Rush Days celebration is coming soon. The five day event is scheduled to start on Wednesday, July 29th through Sunday, August 2nd. Gold Rush Days is a non-profit organization that hosts an annual 5-day celebration honoring the past, present, and future of Valdez, Alaska. Every year the organization donates money to a variety of local charities and organizations, focusing on those for the children and the future of Valdez.

Gold Rush Days, Golden Rock Awards promotes the beautification of Valdez through the fine art of gardening. The Golden Rock is looking for gardeners to be nominated in these categories: Beds & Borders, Container Garden, Vegetable Garden, Mommy & Me, Lawn Art, Overall Landscaping and Business Landscape. The Award Ceremony will be held at the Prince William Sound Community College, Scholarship Luncheon, Gold Rush Days Crowning of the King and Queen, and Golden Rock Awards on Wednesday, July 29 at Noon. The deadline for entries is Friday, July 22, 2015 4:00 PM. Applications can be picked up and dropped off at Rogue’s Garden, Valdez City Hall and the Whitney Museum. Nominees will be contacted by the GRA Judges prior to judging July 25. Nominees will be judge in one category. Entries will be judged in: creativity, originality, overall impression, plant vigor, garden/plant maintenance.

The Big Top Circus is coming to town this Friday and Saturday at the South Barney Meyring Park Strip, across the street from the fire station. Shows are scheduled for Friday at 7:00pm and on Saturday at 4:30pm and again at 7:00pm. Tickets for the event are available while supplies last at the Civic Center office, or at City Hall. Advance ticket prices are $15 per adult and $7 per child.

Valdez Parks and Recreation challenges residents to a Valdez-style half marathon trail run along 4 of our beautiful local trails on Saturday, June 13th, starting at the Valdez Teen Center! This half-marathon will be 70% trail running participants are to expect dirt, mud, roots, river rocks, possible water crossings- and 30% in town road running. Valdez Parks and Recreation has scheduled several throughout the summer months for Valdez to promote outdoor activity around the city. With HAWK (Hike Alaska’s Wild Kountry) underway there is also a mountain bike race schedule for this Saturday, along with many others such as the Freedom Fun run. Registration for the bike race will be in the Civic this Saturday starting at 10am. The race will then promptly start after at 10:30am.

The Valdez Race Series is celebrating National Trails Month 2015 with a special hybrid road/trail bike race, hence, the HAWK Mt. Bike Trail Race on Saturday, June 6th, starting at 10AM at the Civic Center. This unique race is designed to be an introductory mountain bike racing event. The trails that will be ridden will be the East and West Dike Mineral Creek trails, which offer a more "beginner" type of trail riding along mostly dirt and rock roads and trails.

Valdez Parks & Rec announces a TRAIL CLOSURE for Mineral Creek East & West Dike Trails on Saturday, June 6th. These trails will be closed to public Saturday, June 6th from 9:00AM-12:00PM for the Valdez Race Series' HAWK Mt. Bike Trail Race for our racers safety. Trails will re-open immediately following the race for public use.

This Friday, June 5th for 21 hours more than 100 walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer when the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Valdez gets underway. Teams will gather across from Ruth Pond on June 5th at 6pm, participants will be helping the Society mark a major milestone in the fight against cancer.
During Relay For Life events, participants will camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relay events take place overnight. The public is encouraged to come out and enjoy good food, fun games, great prizes, and other cool activities sponsored by local teams as they continue to raise money to help fund research and support local services. A small donation is encouraged to participate in the events.

The Valdez Arts Council is wrapping up the season with their annual Burnable Art picnic and bonfire. This event is open to the public and will be held this Tuesday from 6pm to 8pm at Dock Point.  Hotdogs and hamburgers will be provided, but attendants are encouraged to bring a dish to pass as well as their own instruments to help participate with the live music entertainment.

The Bite Back Run/Walk is a fun event that raises funds to help those suffering from malaria. Malaria statistically kills 1 child every minute, 16 children every hour, 1,447 children every night, and 528,000 children every year. The event is open to the public and will be held this Saturday at the Kelsey Dock. Registration will start at 10am with the kid’s one mile race starting at 10:45am, and then followed by the 5K race at 11am.

All proceeds go to Compassion International's Malaria Fund. 

 This Saturday and Sunday, Valdez is saying thank you with Military Appreciation Weekend. The appreciation ceremony is this Saturday at 1:30pm and followed by a FREE community Gourmet Fish Fry on at the Kelsey Dock starting at 2:00pm. The fish fry will include grilled halibut, salads, hot dogs, and all the fixings. The Alaska Army National Guard will also bring activities like “Bouncy Boxing”, “Jousting”, “Rock Wall” and and “Obstacle Course”.

 On Saturday, there will be a Run to benefit the Bite Back organization. Register for the Adult 5K Run/Walk or Kids 1 Mile Run/Walk at 10am Saturday. The Kids Race starts at 10:45 and the 5K Race at 11am. There will be a Community Picnic 1 to 3 on Sunday as well as the National Guard activities again. Come join the fun and celebrate our military this Saturday and Sunday.

The public will have a week to come in and bid on your favorite baskets at a silent auction held today thru Memorial Day on Monday, May 25th. Local merchants and members have donated numerous items to have baskets for men, women, children and babies. The lodge opens weekdays at 4:00 P.M. On Memorial Day the lodge will open at 11:00 A.M. This event will be open to the community to help celebrate and support our Veterans.
All Proceeds from the Silent Auction will be donated to the Wounded Veterans Project


 Valdez Little League Opening Ceremonies are scheduled to be Tuesday, May 26th 6pm at the Valdez Gold Fields. Hopefully you have already registered your child for a team, but if you haven't already done so, Tuesday will be your last chance. Grab a Registration Form off the Valdez Little League Facebook page or at HHES or GMS and turn it in or bring it to the field to make sure your child gets on a team.

The Advocates for Victims of Violence 4th Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is scheduled to be held on Saturday, April 25th from 11am – 1pm at the GMS Track. This international campaign is open to the public and sets to bring awareness to the problem of sexual and gender violence to the public. If people would like to participate, donate, or volunteer they are instructed to call AVV at 835-2980. 
This is an international campaign and all proceeds will go directly to victim services for emergency transportation, medical and more.

Mike Bowden has risen to the challenge to Walk A Mile in Her Shoes – A Men’s March Against Domestic Violence. The Valdez City Schools and Valdez Police Department have brought in youth drug and alcohol abuse specialist Ray Lozano, to speak in a series of presentations. On Wednesday, April 1st he will be speaking at the Gilson Middle School, followed by the Valdez High School on Thursday, April 2nd and Friday, April 3rd. In addition to the school showings, Lozano will be having a presentation at the Civic Center on Thursday, April 2nd from 7:00 – 8:30pm. This event is free and open to the public.

The Valdez Youth Coalition is hosting a community bonfire this Thursday at Dock Point. The event will begin at 5:30pm. Teens 6th through 12th grade are invited to the event for free hot dogs and s’mores. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to meet the Youth Drug & Alcohol Abuse Prevention Specialist, Ray Lozano. Lozano is speaking at the Civic Center Thursday night at 7pm.

The CVEA Board of Director election deadline is fast approaching.  There are two Director seats up for election in the Valdez District. Members should check the mail for their packet containing a ballot and candidate information. CVEA reminds you to sign the back of your ballot envelope and mail it. It must be received in the designated post office box by 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 7.

Thursday, April 16th at Valdez Civic Center

It’s CVEA Annual Meeting time. Members who come to the meeting and sign in will get a $10 energy credit and be entered to win tons of fabulous door prizes, including a Chevy Tahoe Beater.  Sharon Crisp said members should attend even if they're not feeling lucky as everyone who attends will enjoy good food and take home a CVEA logo item or two. Crisp said this is an opportunity to find out what's going on at your Cooperative while having a good time. The Valdez Literacy Council will be presenting "Reading Under the Stars" on Thursday, March 26th from 6:30-8:00 in the evening. Hermon Hutchens will be decorated like the great outdoors, complete with trees, tents, campfires and maybe a bear or two. Attendants will listen to various community members reading stories. The public is invited to the event. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The City of Valdez is hosting the 2nd Annual Valdez Winter Games. Residents of Valdez are encouraged to compete in one or all three events. Snowshoe races (kids and adult), XC Freestyle Ski races (kids and adult), and a Biathlon event (XC Ski & Archery combined.) Ages 4 & up are welcome. Donations at the event will benefit Compassion International's "Water of Life", providing children in poverty with water filters. This special Winter Games competition is co-sponsored by Sheri Beck, with Compassion International, Steve Shiell, with the PWSCC Archery Club, and Valdez Parks & Recreation.

There is a caregiver support group held today at the Valdez Senior Center from 5:30pm – 6:30pm. The support group looks to help primary caregivers of loved ones with chronic debilitating illnesses, or for those caring for elderly parents and look to provide an environment to share in confidence where attendants can learn and support each other.

The Second Annual Wings over Valdez will be happening the first two weekends of April (April 4th & 5th and April 11th & 12th)  
According to an article on “The purpose of the Wings over Valdez event is to showcase the flying sports of Speed riding, Paragliding and Skydiving. The future goal of the W.O.V. event will be to show what the beautiful city of Valdez, Alaska has to offer as far as flying opportunities, and they are world class!” Most of the pilots that will fly at the Wings over Valdez event are part of the Arctic Airwalkers club out of Eagle River, Alaska. The Arctic Airwalkers are the oldest and biggest paragliding club in the USA. With several US paragliding and World cup champions. Two helicopters will whisk pilots to the top of the 5000ft+ mountains above Valdez. From there, pilots will coordinate acrobatic displays of technical flying. Look for spiral dives, wing overs and colored smoke to entertain. Also, speed wing or speed rider pilots will be hugging close to the Mountain and proximity flying and rapidly descending heart stopping lines over rock cliff faces.

High School Principal Rod Schug said there will be musical instruments to try, as well as woodworking and science experiments to see. The snow just started this year, but KVAK is busy planning a 10-day festival to celebrate the fact that winter is almost over. The Frosty Fever Festival will highlights events put on between February 20th through March 1st. This year's festivities include the International Food Fair, Bingo Night at HHES, the Splash-In, Zipfy Races, Prospector's Outdoor Challenge, TBA Theater performances and more. The Valdez Youth Wrestling Club is having a meeting today from 6:30pm to 8:00pm in the middle school commons area to explain the program and the registration process. All children are encouraged to participate.
To register a child they must age five or older. Parents must provide insurance information for medical waiver, and pay a $30.00 registration fee, along with a $40.00 online USA membership fee. Practice will start on February 2nd, and the club will cover folk style, freestyle, and Greco style wrestling.

The public of Valdez is invited to a “meet & greet” event with Govenor Bill Walker and Lt. Govenor Byron Mallot. This event will be held Friday, January 3rd from 1 to 3pm at the Gilson Middle School. Valdez High School girls’ basketball player Marian Wamsley will remain in the state and play basketball for the Alaska Nanooks next season, the university announced Wednesday. “Marian is a great addition to our program,” Nanooks head coach Cody Bench said in a University of Alaska Fairbanks press release. “She is a hard worker both on the court and in the classroom and she will excel in both aspects here at the University of Alaska.”

More than 170 people will gather in Valdez on Wednesday for three days of workshops, meetings and presentations designed to address the issues facing electric utilities in Alaska. Those in attendance will hear an update on the Allison Creek Hydroelectric Project, and some insight on what is happening with Eklutna Generation Station. These are both in addition to the host of speakers on hand with ranging areas of expertise.
