VALDEZ ARTS COUNCIL PICNIC

This Tuesday, May 26th
6pm – 8pm at Dock Point

The Valdez Arts Council is wrapping up the season with their annual Burnable Art picnic and bonfire. This event is open to the public and will be held this Tuesday from 6pm to 8pm at Dock Point.  Hotdogs and hamburgers will be provided, but attendants are encouraged to bring a dish to pass as well as their own instruments to help participate with the live music entertainment.

5th ANNUAL BITE BACK RUN/WALK
Saturday, May 30th at the Kelsey Dock
Registration 10 a.m.
Kids' One Mile race 10:45 a.m.
5K Race 11:00 a.m.

The Bite Back Run/Walk is a fun event that raises funds to help those suffering from malaria. Malaria statistically kills 1 child every minute, 16 children every hour, 1,447 children every night, and 528,000 children every year. The event is open to the public and will be held this Saturday at the Kelsey Dock. Registration will start at 10am with the kid’s one mile race starting at 10:45am, and then followed by the 5K race at 11am.

All proceeds go to Compassion International's Malaria Fund. 

 
MILITARY APPRECIATION IS THIS WEEKEND SATURDAY ACTIVITIES
 This Saturday and Sunday, Valdez is saying thank you with Military Appreciation Weekend. The appreciation ceremony is this Saturday at 1:30pm and followed by a FREE community Gourmet Fish Fry on at the Kelsey Dock starting at 2:00pm. The fish fry will include grilled halibut, salads, hot dogs, and all the fixings. The Alaska Army National Guard will also bring activities like “Bouncy Boxing”, “Jousting”, “Rock Wall” and and “Obstacle Course”.

SUNDAY RUN & PICNIC
 On Sunday, there will be a Run to benefit the Bite Back organization. Register for the Adult 5K Run/Walk or Kids 1 Mile Run/Walk at 10am Sunday. The Kids Race starts at 10:45 and the 5K Race at 11am. There will be a Community Picnic 1 to 3 on Sunday as well as the National Guard activities again. Come join the fun and celebrate our military this Saturday and Sunday.

MEMORIAL DAY SILENT AUCTION
Bidding: Monday, May 18th and closes at 5:00 P.M. on Memorial Day at the Elks Lodge

 
The public will have a week to come in and bid on your favorite baskets at a silent auction held today thru Memorial Day on Monday, May 25th. Local merchants and members have donated numerous items to have baskets for men, women, children and babies. The lodge opens weekdays at 4:00 P.M. On Memorial Day the lodge will open at 11:00 A.M. This event will be open to the community to help celebrate and support our Veterans.
 
All Proceeds from the Silent Auction will be donated to the Wounded Veterans Project


 
VALDEZ LITTLE LEAGUE

 Valdez Little League Opening Ceremonies are scheduled to be Tuesday, May 26th 6pm at the Valdez Gold Fields. Hopefully you have already registered your child for a team, but if you haven't already done so, Tuesday will be your last chance. Grab a Registration Form off the Valdez Little League Facebook page or at HHES or GMS and turn it in or bring it to the field to make sure your child gets on a team.

The Valdez Arts Council is bringing Metales M5 to Valdez this Tuesday. Martin Hackleman said “M5 is the best thing to come out of Mexico since tequila! Their sense of style, showmanship, and virtuosity is a rare treat not to be missed”. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students and military. 4th ANNUAL WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES
Saturday, April 25th 2015
11:00am – 1:00pm at the Gilson Middle School Track

The Advocates for Victims of Violence 4th Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is scheduled to be held on Saturday, April 25th from 11am – 1pm at the GMS Track. This international campaign is open to the public and sets to bring awareness to the problem of sexual and gender violence to the public. If people would like to participate, donate, or volunteer they are instructed to call AVV at 835-2980. 
This is an international campaign and all proceeds will go directly to victim services for emergency transportation, medical and more.


THE RED DRESS CAMPAIGN
Mike Bowden has risen to the challenge to Walk A Mile in Her Shoes – A Men’s March Against Domestic Violence. YOUTH DRUG AND ALCOHOL PRESENTATION

The Valdez City Schools and Valdez Police Department have brought in youth drug and alcohol abuse specialist Ray Lozano, to speak in a series of presentations. On Wednesday, April 1st he will be speaking at the Gilson Middle School, followed by the Valdez High School on Thursday, April 2nd and Friday, April 3rd. In addition to the school showings, Lozano will be having a presentation at the Civic Center on Thursday, April 2nd from 7:00 – 8:30pm. This event is free and open to the public.

VALDEZ YOUTH COALITION BONFIRE

5:30pm at Dock Point

The Valdez Youth Coalition is hosting a community bonfire this Thursday at Dock Point. The event will begin at 5:30pm. Teens 6th through 12th grade are invited to the event for free hot dogs and s’mores. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to meet the Youth Drug & Alcohol Abuse Prevention Specialist, Ray Lozano. Lozano is speaking at the Civic Center Thursday night at 7pm.

 
ELECT A CVEA DIRECTOR
The CVEA Board of Director election deadline is fast approaching.  There are two Director seats up for election in the Valdez District. Members should check the mail for their packet containing a ballot and candidate information. CVEA reminds you to sign the back of your ballot envelope and mail it. It must be received in the designated post office box by 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 7.

It’s CVEA Annual Meeting time. READING UNDER THE STARS

The Valdez Literacy Council will be presenting "Reading Under the Stars" on Thursday, March 26th from 6:30-8:00 in the evening. Hermon Hutchens will be decorated like the great outdoors, complete with trees, tents, campfires and maybe a bear or two. Attendants will listen to various community members reading stories. The public is invited to the event. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The City of Valdez is hosting the 2nd Annual Valdez Winter Games. Residents of Valdez are encouraged to compete in one or all three events. Snowshoe races (kids and adult), XC Freestyle Ski races (kids and adult), and a Biathlon event (XC Ski & Archery combined.) Ages 4 & up are welcome. Donations at the event will benefit Compassion International's "Water of Life", providing children in poverty with water filters. This special Winter Games competition is co-sponsored by Sheri Beck, with Compassion International, Steve Shiell, with the PWSCC Archery Club, and Valdez Parks & Recreation.

 CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP

There is a caregiver support group held today at the Valdez Senior Center from 5:30pm – 6:30pm. The support group looks to help primary caregivers of loved ones with chronic debilitating illnesses, or for those caring for elderly parents and look to provide an environment to share in confidence where attendants can learn and support each other.

The Second Annual Wings over Valdez will be happening the first two weekends of April (April 4th & 5th and April 11th & 12th)  
According to an article on www.alaskakiteadventures.com “The purpose of the Wings over Valdez event is to showcase the flying sports of Speed riding, Paragliding and Skydiving. The future goal of the W.O.V. event will be to show what the beautiful city of Valdez, Alaska has to offer as far as flying opportunities, and they are world class!” Most of the pilots that will fly at the Wings over Valdez event are part of the Arctic Airwalkers club out of Eagle River, Alaska. The Arctic Airwalkers are the oldest and biggest paragliding club in the USA. With several US paragliding and World cup champions. Two helicopters will whisk pilots to the top of the 5000ft+ mountains above Valdez. From there, pilots will coordinate acrobatic displays of technical flying. Look for spiral dives, wing overs and colored smoke to entertain. Also, speed wing or speed rider pilots will be hugging close to the Mountain and proximity flying and rapidly descending heart stopping lines over rock cliff faces.

1st ANNUAL SCIENCE, ART, MUSIC AND WOODWORKING FESTIVAL

The Valdez High School is hosting their very 1st annual Science, Art, Music, and Woodworking Festival. High School Principal Rod Schug said there will be musical instruments to try, as well as woodworking and science experiments to see. Schug said he is excited to showcase student work and have all Valdez children and parents in to see what VHS has to offer in the arts and sciences. This event is open to the public.

The snow just started this year, but KVAK is busy planning a 10-day festival to celebrate the fact that winter is almost over. The Frosty Fever Festival will highlights events put on between February 20th through March 1st. This year's festivities include the International Food Fair, Bingo Night at HHES, the Splash-In, Zipfy Races, Prospector's Outdoor Challenge, TBA Theater performances and more. The Valdez Youth Wrestling Club is having a meeting today from 6:30pm to 8:00pm in the middle school commons area to explain the program and the registration process. All children are encouraged to participate.
To register a child they must age five or older. Parents must provide insurance information for medical waiver, and pay a $30.00 registration fee, along with a $40.00 online USA membership fee. Practice will start on February 2nd, and the club will cover folk style, freestyle, and Greco style wrestling.

VALDEZ’S MARIAN WAMSLEY SET TO PLAY FOR THE NANOOKS

Valdez High School girls’ basketball player Marian Wamsley will remain in the state and play basketball for the Alaska Nanooks next season, the university announced Wednesday. “Marian is a great addition to our program,” Nanooks head coach Cody Bench said in a University of Alaska Fairbanks press release. “She is a hard worker both on the court and in the classroom and she will excel in both aspects here at the University of Alaska.”

The Great Candy Cane Caper
Grab the whole family and enjoy and Old-Time Radio Drama on KVAK Radio 93.3FM & 1230AM. A cast of characters will converge on the KVAK studios and perform “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” LIVE on-air. The VHS Choir will join us and we’ll play songs recorded by Hermon Hutchens students. We will have prize giveaways and encourage our listeners to join us in the Great Candy Cane Caper.

ALASKA POWER ASSOCIATION HOLDS 63rd ANNUAL MEETING IN VALDEZ


More than 170 people will gather in Valdez on Wednesday for three days of workshops, meetings and presentations designed to address the issues facing electric utilities in Alaska. Those in attendance will hear an update on the Allison Creek Hydroelectric Project, and some insight on what is happening with Eklutna Generation Station. These are both in addition to the host of speakers on hand with ranging areas of expertise.

Valdez Arts Council will be hosting the annual Blues Cruise Fundraiser this Friday with live music from Rik Nielsen and friends. Boarding begins at 6:30 pm with a 7pm departure on the Stan Stephen’s MV Valdez Spirit. The cost is $50 per ticket and you can get your tickets at A Rogue’s Garden and Harbor Landing General Store.
MEET 2012’S NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ADVENTURER OF THE YEAR

Valdez Parks & Rec invites you to join Jennifer Pharr Davis, an endurance hiker named 2012’s National Geographic Adventurer of the Year this Tuesday at 7 P.M at the Valdez Library. Jennifer has logged over 12,000 miles on some of the world’s best trails across six different continents. They will also be announcing the H.A.W.K. finale winners! Please join us at the Valdez library, for what is sure to be an exciting and inspiring presentation from this world class athlete, author and wilderness adventurer.
