You are invited to a public meeting to discuss home school options through Valdez City Schools on Thursday, July 24, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the School Board Room in the Valdez City Schools District Office, 1112 West Klutina Street, Valdez, Alaska. Valdez City Schools strives to meet the educational needs of all Valdez youth with local services, local teachers, technology, and peer support. Valdez City Schools is developing a home school program and seeks input from current and potential home school families. Please join us for a rich discussion to help the Valdez City Schools better meet the needs of all Valdez students.
COLORS OF CANCER FUN RUN THIS SATURDAY

Walker or runner, rain or shine, the Valdez Relay for Life folks encourage you to get out and have some fun and get colorful in the COLORS OF CANCER FUN RUN. The run is this Saturday at Dock Point. Registration starts at 10AM, the 1 mile run starts at 10:30, and the 3 and 6 mile runs start at 11AM. The fun-run is the last event of the local American Cancer Society Relay For Life fundraising efforts to raise funds to finish the fight against cancer. Come out and run or walk your choice of tracks as volunteer’s splash you with one of the COLORS OF CANCER.

If you enjoy baking cupcakes and sharing with friends and neighbors, PTA organizers say you should sign up for the 3rd Annual Cupcake Wars. There is a $100 first place prize and $50 2nd place prize in both the kids and adult age divisions. There will also be a prize for the overall crowd favorite. KIDS SCAVENGER HUNT
ALASKA INTERNATIONAL SENIOR GAMES
The Alaska International Senior Games are for those 50 and above. The games will be held in Fairbanks August 8th through the 17th, and these games are qualifying events for the 2015 National Senior Games to be held in Minneapolis next July. There are opening ceremonies, a dance social, and even a celebration of athletes on the Riverboat Discovery. Mark your calendars for the Alaska International Senior Games August 8th through the 17th. Registration closes July 31st.
2nd ANNUAL PINK SALMON FESTIVAL ART CONTEST
Test your artistic talents by decorating a 4 foot wooden fishing book cut out. Boots are available at the Civic Centre Monday through Friday between 9am and 5pm for a minimum donation of $10. Return your fish to the Civic Center no later than July 3rd. All entries will be displayed and available for public voting starting July 4th through 6th. Artists from the show will gather for a rare and lively discussion about how history and the reflection of place resonate with artists and art-making. Art-historian, Kesler Woodward, will facilitate the conversation. Refreshments will be served. This event is FREE.

Artist, Klara Maisch joins us from Fairbanks, to host a workshop, where participants will create a sketchbook from scratch, and work outside to fill the pages in creative ways. Cost is $17 for members and $20 for non-members. Maximum of 12 participants.

Anchorage artist, author and teacher Don Decker, will share the evolution of his 50 years’ worth of work. Described as both an outstanding teacher and practicing artist, Decker’s presentation is a “can’t miss opportunity”. This event is FREE.
