VHS Ski Coach Pete Toye provided a rundown of the Buc's recent cross country ski meet in Matsu noting highlights from the two day event including
junior Stephanie Allen’s tie for 3rd place in the field of 37. Junior Sergei Wegner was the top finisher for the boys placing 8th in the field of 45. Toye also included a shout out for former Buc skier John Snelders won the boys championship in both events.  Toye added an “Editor’s Note” saying:
“I’m not sure how many folks can truly appreciate the quiet strength, courage, and toughness these kids demonstrate each week as they compete with the cantankerous Alaskan winter at both practice and races. Last Friday was a perfect example as they plunged head on, without complaint or hesitation, into numbing wind chills wearing only their thin nylon race uniforms. The rest of us had on all the clothes we brought and were still cold! Combine that with the nuances of a relatively unknown race course, and ever changing snow and temperature conditions, and you have the most unique and challenging sport that I have ever experienced.”

The basketball games against Monroe for tonight and Saturday have been cancelled due to road closures and hazardous roads resulting from avalanches and extreme weather conditions.

In the wake of the Richardson bus crash on Friday, January 10th, the cross country ski teams proceeded with the Valdez Invite competition. Ski coach Pete Toye shared his thoughts on the event saying “The bus crash on the pass involving the teams from Kenai and Skyview was certainly a tragic and terrifying start to, what promised to be, a very competitive weekend involving 220 skiers from 10 high schools.” Coach Toye provided a full summary of the Invite as well as a recap of the weekend’s Kenai Classic meet. The Valdez Lady Bucs lost in overtime 66-57 to the Barrow Whalers. The games leading scorer was Rose Mangoyuck of Barrow with 23 points which includes 6 crucial points in overtime. To lead the Bucs Katy Merioles and Veronica Hursh both put in 13 points. Next was Rachel MacDonald who had twelve. Turnovers and a lack of rebounding caused the girls to give up 15 point lead at one point. By the fourth quarter the game was tied and Barrow capitalized and took the lead. Timely buckets from Katy Merioles, and Senior Rachel MacDonald put them back in the game but were able to pull it out in overtime.  The girls will conclude the tournament with a 4th place finish and the Boys ended with a 7th place finish in a massive victory over Tikigaq led by Senior Caj Rohrer. Both teams now look toward focusing on their upcoming home games against the Delta Junction Huskies.

Valdez lost the conference opener against Eielson on Saturday, 68-0. Missed tackles and special teams plagued the young team for the second week in a row. Valdez fumbled two kickoffs that result in turn overs early in the game.
Eielson, the defending 3A state champions, had an exceptional day running the ball accumulating over 500 yards of offense. Valdez was held to under 200 yards of total offense. Despite the score the team played well throughout the game, especially the underclassmen. Valdez will go on the road this weekend to Homer to play Voznesenka on Friday night at 6:00 PM.
