PRESS RELEASE FOR THE WEEK OF
June 10, 2013 – June 16, 2013
 

Any charges reported in this press release are merely accusations
and the Defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
 
 
6/10
 
Noise Disturbance:  Officers responded to a complaint of loud music.  Officers could not locate any residence with loud music.
 
Traffic Complaint:  A caller reported that a small boy on a four wheeler pulled out in front of him down by the small boat harbor. 
 
***Reminder – Anyone under the driving age or unlicensed drivers are not allowed to drive any vehicle, including four wheelers, on city/state roadways.
 
Criminal Mischief:  A report was received about new graffiti on the Shoup Bay Trailhead Comfort Station. This case is under investigation.
 
Animal Noise:  The Animal Control Officer issued a warning for animal noise after responding to a report of continuously barking dogs.
 
Theft Property:  Tools were stolen from a city vehicle at the West Egan city shop. If you have any information about this, please contact the Police Department.
 
Traffic Complaint:  Officers made contact with two vehicles that were driving erratically and playing chase around town.  Warnings were issued to both drivers.
 
Welfare Check:  Officers made contact with an unresponsive female in the back of a vehicle. Subject was taken into protective custody.

Garbage Regulations:  Multiple warnings were issued to residents for violation of a Valdez Municipal code pertaining to trash not put in a proper container.
 
 
 
 
 
Found Property: A skateboard found by the Visitors Kiosk was turned into VPD. Call with further identifiers to claim.
 
Domestic:  Officers respond to an argument between two roommates.  The two individuals were separated for the remainder of night.
 
Possible Drunk Driver: A report was received that a female was driving under the influence.  Officers made contact with the driver, who was found to be negative for alcohol.

DUI:  Ricardo Cardoso, DOB 1/5/60, of Valdez was arrested for Driving Under the Influence.
 
Lost Property:  A gold wedding band as reported lost in the Valdez area.  If you have found this item, please turn it into the Police Department.
 
Bear Incidents:  Numerous reports of traffic jams due to bear watching have been responded to by the Animal Control Officer and the Community Service Officer.
 
Animal Bite:  The medical clinic reported an individual bitten by a dog. The animal was put under quarantine for 10 days.
 
Fireworks:  Officers responded to a report of gunshots or fireworks at the water tower on West Egan.  Officers contacted several people in the area, and no one had heard any fireworks or gunshots.
 
Animal Noise: Caller reported a dog barking continuously. The owner was not home, officers impounded the dog.
 
Noise Disturbance:  Complaints were received about loud music and talking at the back of a local bar. The bartender was notified and the exterior doors where shut to minimize the noise. No further complaints were received.

Lost Property:  A Nokia cell phone was reported lost in the Valdez area.  If you have found this item, please turn it into the Police Department.
 
Traffic Complaint:  Officers responded to a report of four wheelers racing up and down Salcha Way, off of Airport Road.  Officers did not locate any offending drivers.
 
6/14
 
Assault Weapon:  Officers responded to a report of an assault with a knife.
 
Arrested:  Charles Wilkinson, DOB 10/8/83, of Valdez was arrested for Assault 2nd Degree (two charges), Assault 4th Degree and Criminal Mischief.  He was also remanded for violating felony probation.
 
Traffic Hazard:  Officers removed a large rock from the middle of the roadway at Salmon Turnaround.
 
Theft Property:  A caller stated that her brand new shrimp pots were stolen from her boat while it was parked in the Totem parking lot.  If you have any information about this, please contact the Police Department.
 
Welfare Check:  A welfare check was requested on the victim of an assault by concerned family members.
 
Theft Property:  The theft of household appliances, tools and luggage was reported by a landlord.  If you have any information about this, please contact the Police Department.
 
Bear Incident:  A report was received about a bear being chased into a tree by enthusiastic photographers.

Traffic Complaint:  A local cab driver reported a vehicle parked partially in the roadway near the glacier stream bridge.  The vehicle had run out of gas.
 
Welfare Check:  A welfare check was requested for a patient that was not with their caretaker.  The individual was returned to care and personnel issues were to be addressed.
 
Traffic Complaint:  A large tote flew out of the back of a truck and almost caused an accident.
 
Lost Property:  A black wallet containing Alaska drivers license and credit cards was reported lost in the Valdez area.  If you have found this item, please turn it into the Police Department.
 
MVA-D:  A vehicle drove into the yard of a private residence and hit a tree and then drove off.  The driver, Donny Carlson of Valdez, was issued citations for Liability Insurance required, expired registration, Mirror requirements and Plates to be displayed properly.
 
DUI:  Isaac Cottrell, DOB 10/26/94, of Anchorage was arrested for Driving Under the Influence and Minor Consuming Alcohol.
 
Fireworks:  Officers responded to a report of loud fireworks. 
 
Harassment:  A local business reported a patron that was harassing the workers and making inappropriate statements.
 
Bear Incident:  A concerned resident called and reported a bear on her back porch and scratching at the wall.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
6/16
 
Possible Drunk Driver:  Officers responded and made contact with a possible intoxicated driver. The driver was found to be reading a text.   A warning was issued to the driver for driving w/screen device interference.
 
Suspicious Vehicle:  A complaint was received about a person sleeping in a vehicle outside a local residence.  The individual moved.
 
MCA: Isaac R. Cottrell, DOB: 10/26/94, of Anchorage was issued a summons for Minor Consuming.  A juvenile was also issued a summons for Minor Consuming.  The juvenile was also taken into custody as a runaway.

On June 4 at 5:25 pm EMS personnel assisted a resident from the airport to Providence Valdez Medical Center for further treatment.
 
On June 6 at 6:19 pm Fire personnel responded to a reported house fire in Robe River. A resident had been soldering his water pipes under his trailer house and had caught the plastic and a floor joist on fire. The resident had extinguished the fire and wanted the area checked by the fire department.
 
On June 8 at 6:19 pm EMS personnel assisted a lady up after she had fallen.
 
On June 9 at 3:54 pm Hazmat personnel checked the Robe River area after a report of foul smells was reported. Crews could not find any hazmat issues in the area of the report.
 
On June 10 at 1:36 pm EMS personnel responded to an intoxicated female. The patient was treated on scene and transported to Providence Valdez Medical Center for further treatment.
