PRESS RELEASE FOR THE WEEK OF
August 18-August 24, 2014
 
Any charges reported in this press release are merely accusations

8/19   
 
CRIMINAL MISCHIEF: The Valdez Police received a report that a boat trailer had been vandalized while parked in front of a local hotel.  If you have information regarding this incident please call VPD.                                                                                                                                                         
THEFT: The theft of a 20 foot extension ladder from the Vessel GUS E while in dry dock at the lay down yard on North Harbor Dr was reported. If anyone has any information regarding this incident please contact the Valdez Police Department.
 
 
8/19   
 
POSSIBLE DUI:  Officers stopped a driver near the Airport Rd/Richardson Hwy intersection for erratic driving and swerving over the center line. On investigation it was determined the driver was not intoxicated and released with no further action.
 
8/20   
 
ALARM: A caller reported an alarm going off near the Betty Cato Bridge, on West Egan Officers determined it was coming from a power substation. The utility was contacted and they dispatched a crew to silence the alarm.
 
LOST PROPERTY:  A new AT&T cell phone was reported lost in the Dock Point picnic area. If found please turn into the Valdez Police Department.
 
8/21  
 
FOUND PROPERTY: An Alaska drivers license was turned into VPD. It was later returned to its owner.
 
PUBLIC SERVICE: VPD conducted ALICE training for Valdez Elementary Staff.
 
WARRANT ARREST:  John D. Boone, DOB; 0/13/91 of Valdez was arrested on a Valdez Warrant for Failure to Appear in Court for a Motion hearing. 
 
WELFARE CHECK: VPD received a report that the callers friend had stopped by work threatening to commit suicide. Officers looked everywhere in the area and were later informed that the subject was back at their home and everything was ok.
 
SERVE TIME: Kevin M. Carter, DOB: 4/4/91 of Valdez reported to the Valdez Jail to serve 3 days on an original charge of DUI.
 
PUBLIC SERVICE: VPD conducted ALICE training for Valdez Middle School Staff.
 
ARRESTED:  Corie J. Taylor, DOB: 10/05/83 of Valdez was arrested for Assault 4, Resisting Arrest, and Disorderly Conduct after officers were called to a disturbance at a local picnic area. He is being held at the Valdez Jail on $3500 bail.
 
ARRESTED: Donovan L. Kelly, DOB:10/11/72 of Valdez was arrested For Driving Under the Influence.
 
 
8/22  
 
FOUND PROPERTY:  A Washington state drivers license for Earl Kinsey was turned into VPD. Please stop by VPD to claim.
 
PUBLIC SERVICE: VPD conducted ALICE training for Valdez High School Staff.
 
NOISE DISTURBANCE: Officers responded to a complaint of someone screaming obscene things for about 20 minutes and believes the person is intoxicated. Upon arrival officers made contact with a man walking out of town, alcohol was not a factor. After talking to officers the man continued on his way with no further issues.
 
TRAFFIC HAZARD: Valdez Police received a report of trailers parked on the side of South Meals Ave in a no parking area. The trailers were tagged with notices to be moved or they would be impounded.
 
DISTURBANCE: Officers responded to a call of a neighbor possibly having some issues and smashing things with a bat. When officers arrived they were able to get the bat away from the individual who was transported to the hospital by EMS for treatment.
 
NOISE DISTURBANCE: VPD received a report of a group of kids being loud. Upon investigation officers discovered a group of kids have a birthday party and they were playing hide and Seek.  The adults present agreed to have the kids keep it down.
 
DISTURBANCE: Officers responded to a call of a possible altercation going on at a neighbor’s house.  Upon arrival officers found the people were yelling at the garage door that was malfunctioning and their dogs that were escaping.
 
 
8/23    
 
THEFT: The theft of a skate board was reported from the John Kelsey Dock bathroom area. It is described as a Sector 9 Long board with swallow tail, gritty grey top, image of a blue & white barrel of a wave on the bottom, blue wheels, deck of skateboard flexes and has an almost concave shape when in use. If anyone has any information regarding this incident please contact the Valdez Police.
 
DISTURBANCE: A local business that was closed for the night reported a belligerent man wanting in and demanding soup. Officer searched the area but the individual had moved on.
 
SUSPICIOUS PERSON: Valdez police received a call from a local bar that a man that had been kicked out 4 times already is back and is lurking in the area. Officers made contact with the individual who was given a warning not to be in the bars anymore that night and to leave the area. No further incidents were reported.
 
THEFT: A report of gas being siphoned from a car at the airport was received by Valdez Police Dispatch. If anyone has any information regarding this incident please contact the Valdez Police.
 
ARRESTED: Ronnie J. Avila, DOB; 02/01/41 of Fairbanks was arrested for Driving With License Revoked after he was stopped for a stop sign violation.
 
ARRESTED: William J. Gittins, DOB: 9/27/86 of Valdez was arrested for DUI, Reckless Driving, 2 counts of Reckless endangerment, and Violating Conditions of Release after officers responded to multiple calls of a vehicle driving recklessly and almost hitting pedestrians before crashing into the bushes.
 
 
8/24   
 
THEFT: VPD received a report of the theft of a yellow roll top bag from a motorcycle parked in front of a local B&B. The bag contained a sleeping bag, a sleeping mat and a blow up pillow. If anyone has any information regarding this incident please contact the Valdez Police.

          
ADDITIONAL CHARGES: William J. Gittins, DOB: 9/27/86 of Valdez was charged with two more counts of Violating Conditions of Release. He is currently incarcerated at the Valdez Jail on other charges and as part of his conditions was not to make contact with an individual. Mr. Gittins made contact with this individual via telephone and was subsequently charged with VCOR.
 
AVOIDANCE OF INTERLOCK: While on routine patrol an officer made contact with an individual lying in the roadway on the tide flats.   It was determined that this individual had jumped from a moving vehicle.  Officers requested EMS and while talking with EMT’s the suspect, who was believed to be driving, took off running and disappeared up the mountain.  The subject was found later at a local establishment. Christian C McGee, DOB: 7/12/79 of Valdez was charged with Avoidance of Ignition Interlock and Violating Conditions of Release.

8-18-14 Valdez Fire Department responded to investigate a hazardous condition on West Klutina Dr and  South Moraine. After investigation the cause of the smell was a leading gas can.     
     
8-19-14 Valdez EMS responded to an ill patient that was treated at the scene and transported to Providence Valdez Medical Center.         

8-19-14 Valdez EMS responded to a patient who was injured in Area I. The patient was treated on scene and transported to Providence Valdez Medical Center.

8-21-14 Valdez EMS responded to patient needing medical attention after being in an altercation. The patient was treated on scene.  
 
8-21-14 Valdez EMS responded to patient needing medical attention at the Valdez City jail. The patient was treated on scene.

8-22-14 Valdez Fire Department responded to investigate a CO alarm activation. There was no CO found after the investigation.

8-22-14 Valdez EMS responded to patient needing medical assistance. The patient was treated on scene and transported to Providence Valdez Medical Center.

8-23-14 Valdez Fire Department responded to a possible fire at Simmons Trailer Court. The chimney fire was extinguished.
