PRESS RELEASE FOR THE WEEK OF
September 8th – September 14th, 2014

 
Any charges reported in this press release are merely accusations
and the Defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
 
 
09/08
 
Disturbance – Noise: A caller reported a verbal argument between two people that seemed about to escalate into a physical altercation. Officers responded to an apartment complex, followed a trail of blood droplets and made contact with an individual who had reportedly taken a fall on the stairwell in an unrelated incident. No contact was made with the individuals causing the initial disturbance.
 
Lost Property: A cell phone and an Alaska ID were reported lost somewhere in the Valdez area. If found, please turn into the VPD.
 
Welfare Check: Officers made contact with an individual who hadn’t returned to work at the expected time and was not answering her cell phone. It was determined she was fine and returned to work.
 
Suspicious Person: Officers made contact with an individual who was reported as trying to gain access to a locked building. The individual was the owner and was having trouble with the keys to the door.
 
Lost Property: Two cell phones were reported lost within the past few days. If found, please turn in to the VPD.
 
Arrested: Eric William Robinson, DOB 07/27/1984, formerly of North Carolina, was arrested for Driving with License Revoked/Suspended/Cancelled.
 
09/09
 
Arrested: Tell Mentasta Hand, DOB 08/06/1987, of Valdez, was arrested for Driving under the Influence. Mr. Hand provided a breath sample which yielded a BrAC of .132 at the time of his arrest. After pleading out at his arraignment, Mr. Hand was held to serve 3 days jail time.
 
Information: Officers contacted 2 individuals working on cutting a trail after receiving reports of persons using a chainsaw and harvesting wood without a permit.
 
Family Issues: Officers assisted in locating a juvenile that was reported as missing.
 
09/10
 
Harassment: A report of harassment was made to the VPD concerning 2 people who had been hired for residential cleaning services. Officers contacted the individuals and requested they do not contact the complainant or go to her home or work after failing to provide the services and requesting payment for said services in firearms.
 
Domestic Assault: A caller reported hearing a woman screaming in the vicinity of Dock Point. The woman was reported as yelling for help and that someone was trying to kill her. Officers responded to the area and made one arrest. The woman was not injured.
 
Arrested: Christopher Kent Nicks, DOB 05/28/1961, of Valdez, was arrested on the charge of Assault 4th Degree – Domestic Violence.
 
09/11
 
Arrested: Jacquelyn Marie Maier, DOB 03/05/1984, of Wisconsin, was arrested on the charge of Driving under the Influence. Maier provided a breath sample producing a BrAC result of .094 upon arrival at the Valdez Jail.
 
Welfare Check: Parents of an individual residing in Valdez requested Officers conduct a welfare check after she made comments of a possible suicide attempt. Officers made contact and put the individual in contact with some counseling personnel.
 
09/12
 
ETOH Pedestrian: A seemingly heavily intoxicated male was reported lying in the street with a bicycle on top of him and appeared to be unable to navigate getting out from under the overturned bicycle. Officers determined he was physically alright and provided transportation for the individual and his bicycle to his residence.
 
Found Property: A wallet containing cash, fly fishing lures, and a condom wrapper was turned into the VPD as found property. Please call with identifiers to claim.
 
Animal Cruelty: The VPD received a report of animal cruelty regarding a dog tied up outside a trailer without any shelter from the elements. Officers investigated and determined the animal has access to shelter but choose to sit in the rain.
 
Serve Time: Ricky Paul McCain, DOB 11/09/1962, of Valdez, reported to the Valdez Jail to serve 120 days with 100 days suspended after being found guilty on the charge of Driving under the Influence.
 
09/13
 
ETOH Pedestrian: Multiple callers reported an intoxicated male pedestrian who appeared to be having difficulty staying on his feet and kept falling into the street. Officers contacted the individual who declined a ride and observed as he made his way home unassisted.
 
Arrested: Mark Patterson Rudy, DOB 12/18/1971, of Anchorage, was arrested on the charge of Driving under the Influence
 
Lost Property: A small purse like bag was reported lost. If found, please turn in to the Valdez Police Department.
 
Information: A complainant requested an Officer meet him in the lobby and give him a breathalyzer test; he wished to preempt a possible traffic stop when he drove home due to the rain and not wanting to get wet if he was requested to perform field sobriety tests. Officers explained that a PBT administered at that time would not preclude a PBT later on in the evening should he get pulled over.
 
Missing Person: A juvenile was reported missing after his family couldn’t locate him. He was located shortly afterwards; there had been a misunderstanding concerning the date of a social event he had attended.
 
09/14
 
Alarm – Other: Officers investigated the report of an audible alarm somewhere in the vicinity of Coast Guard Housing, but were unable to hear anything.
 
Theft – From Vehicle: A shotgun was reported stolen from a parked vehicle. This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with any information, please call the Valdez Police Department.
 
Criminal Mischief: A trailer was reported as having been broken into, trashed and items stolen from the property. Anyone with any information, please call the VPD.

9-12-14 to 9-14-14

9-12-14 Valdez Hazmat team investigated a diesel spell at CJ Tesoro. There seemed to be an excessive fuel spill at the diesel pump.

9-14-14 Valdez Hazmat team responded to a diesel leak. A tank was tipped over, approximately 150-175 gallons leaked out. The area was cleaned.
          
9-14-14 Valdez Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the Orca Building. After investigating the area, is was classified as a false alarm.
