PRESS RELEASE FOR THE WEEK OF April 20, 2015 – April 26, 2015
Any charges reported in this press release are merely accusations and the Defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Agency Assistance: Valdez Police Department assisted the Anchorage Police Department in locating a person of interest for follow up.
Civil Problem/Dispute: A male individual on a bike almost ran into the side of a vehicle that was turning onto Airport Rd. The male individual swore at the driver so he pulled over, and the man continued to swear at him then headed out of town on his bike. An Officer investigated the incident; it was a civil dispute no further assistance was needed.
Agency Assistance: Valdez Police Department assisted the Fire Department with a call for a chemical smell coming from inside a trailer.
Found Property: A parent reported finding money on the sidewalk outside of Herman Hutchins Elementary School. It was turned into the Valdez Police Department.
Traffic Complaint: A report of a vehicle driving thru the park strip was received. An Officer investigated and found an individual from out of state that did not know it was illegal to drive thru the park strip. The Officer issued a warning to the individual.
Welfare Check: A welfare check was requested for a child. An Officer investigated and found the child was fine and in a safe environment.
Traffic Hazard: A person called to report the orange cones in the road marking the pot holes are getting buried by the snow and hard to see. Upon arrival the Officer noted the traffic blocks are visible for at least 200 feet.
Missing Person: An individual from Utah was reported to have gone out for a walk around 2100 hours and never returned. A description of the person was given. An Officer found the person in front of a local business, his cell phone had died and he stayed the night at a different hotel. Officer advised him to call his friends.
Agency Assist: Child Support Services requested VPD assistance in serving Subpoenas to Appear and testify in a Valdez Case.
Animal At Large: A large black lab was reported running free in the Blackgold area. When the Animal Control Officer responded the dog was no longer in the area.
Warrant Arrest: Carrillo, Osvaldo, DOB 7/10/87, of Valdez turned himself in to Valdez Police Department for his Failure to appear bench warrant.
Lost Property: A tan wallet with a mountain and the word ‘ALASKA’ was lost at Landsharks. If you found this wallet please return to the Valdez Police Department.
DUI: Wright, Vicki Lynn, DOB 2/17/54, of Valdez was arrested for Driving Under the Influence, Driving without a Valid License and Reckless Driving.
Animal at Large: Animal Control Officer responded to a dog at large called in anonymously. When the Animal Control Officer arrived in the area the animal had left.
Agency Assistance: Valdez Police Department assisted Palmer Adult Probation with home visits in the Valdez area.
MICS Marijuana: An Officer provided a parent with an information packet on Marijuana use and let them know that the Police Department is a resource if needed.
Traffic Complaint: A caller reported a large board flew out of the back of trailer on the tide flats. The board was obstructing traffic. Officer responded and DOT had it under control.
Civil Problem/Dispute: Two individuals were having a dispute that seemed to be escalating. An Officer made contact with the individuals and advised them to stay away from each other.
Traffic Hazard: A report of chunks of metal flying off of a side dump truck heading outbound was received. An Officer made contact with the driver and his superintendant cleaned up the debris.
Summons: McCain, Justin Paul, DOB 5/21/86, of Valdez was Summonsed for Driving While License Revoked/Driving While License Suspended.
Harassment: A report of a person who ‘caused imminent fear’ towards complainant while he was on his four wheeler with his dog when they drove by in a vehicle and revved the engine. This is currently under investigation.
Agency Assistance: Valdez Police Department assisted Palmer Adult Probation with home visits.
Welfare Check: A report of a 3 year old in a house by themselves was received. Person called back later to report Dad and sons are there and the older son was suppose to be watching the toddler. The toddler was fine.
Disturbance Noise: Caller reported loud music coming from trailer directly behind him and thought it may be an underage party. They had been partying since 5:30. Officer contacted the homeowners and they agreed to turn down the music. It was an Adult party.
Possible Drunk Driver: A caller reported beige or tan truck following a bus, swerving across the center line. An Officer responded, found the vehicle crossing the center line. Negative for alcohol or drugs, just tired.
Serve Time: Patrick, William Joseph Sr, DOB 12/14/74, of Glennallen checked into Valdez Jail to serve time for DUI conviction.
Traffic Hazard: A report of a fallen tree blocking the roadway in Alpine Woods was received. City Shop was contacted; they dispatched a unit to clear the roadway.
Animal at Large: A large black fluffy dog was hanging out at a residence and would not leave. An Officer responded and picked up the dog, it was taken to the animal shelter.
Suspicious Person: A report of a truck and 2 vehicles on the duck flats with what looked like a cross bow on top of the truck was called in. An Officer investigated and found 3 individuals with a drone not a crossbow.
Animal at Large: A caller reported the neighbors dogs are out barking again. One black and one brown dog. Animal Control Officer was familiar with the dogs and handled the call.
Summons: Gotthardt, Isaac Eugene, DOB 9/14/87, of Wasilla was summonsed on Driving Under the Influence.
Possible Drunk Driver: A report of a small black car swerving and driving slow was received. An Officer responded and found negative alcohol.
Reckless Driving: A report of a Ford F150 dark green truck with tinted windows and a blue 55 gallon barrel in the back of the truck blew through the City’s and fire department vehicle barricades by the helicopter landing. An Officer investigated the incident and made contact with several individuals.
Citizen Assist: A person found someone’s tire cover. An Officer returned it to the owner’s porch.
Public Speaking/Appearance: An Officer was requested to do an interview for DARE project.
Traffic Hazard: Valdez Fisheries stated they have re-posted the speed to 25 MPH thru the construction area. Cars are still speeding thru the area. Please exercise caution and reduce speed thru the construction area.
Traffic Hazard: A caller reported seeing a fuel truck driving and texting while turning onto Airport Rd. An Officer spoke with the driver who showed the last text was at 3:30. He did receive a call at 4:43 from work. No driving violation.
MVA- D: A Motor Vehicle Accident with no injuries, damage to vehicle was reported. Officers responded to the scene and issued a citation to exercise due care to avoid collision.
MVA – D: A driver reported that he hit a pole at the Elementary School causing damage to the pole. An Officer investigated the incident and spoke with the driver.
Possible Drunk Driver: A person was driving erratically on the Richardson Highway. An Officer followed the vehicle to their residence; the driver was contacted and was not impaired.
Lost Property: A report of a black tri-fold leather wallet containing a picture of the owner was lost. Please return to the Police Department if found.
DUI: Manners, Jennifer Jean, DOB 8/13/72, of Valdez was arrested for Driving Under the Influence.
Suspicious Person: A caller reported someone in her home. She heard the door open. Officers responded to investigate, all appeared secure and no one had entered the home.
Await Sentencing: Derifield, Michael, DOB 01/03/74, of Valdez was transported back to the Valdez Jail and is awaiting sentencing on original charges of Burglary.
Missing Person: A woman called to report her husband was last seen going to get a coffee in the morning. She had been driving around looking for him and was not been able to locate him. An Officer located his vehicle at the Valdez Glacier. The subject was not well and thus was transported to the hospital for evaluation.
Suspicious Person: A report of a kid skate boarding around town selling something out of his pockets to people in cars was received. An Officer responded but was unable to locate anyone in the area matching the description.
Disturbance Noise: A report of 4 wheelers driving up and down the street speeding and playing loud music was received. An Officer responded and contacted the residence about excessive noise.
Sound of Shots Fired: A report of someone shooting off a gun in Aleutian Trailer park was received. Officers responded to investigate the area, thinks it was just fireworks nothing else found in the area.
Disorderly Conduct: A report of a couple fighting in the middle of the street was called in. Officers responded and spoke with several individuals. Everyone went on their way and no further assistance was needed.
Driving L R/S/C: McCain, Justin Paul, DOB 05/21/1986, of Valdez was arrested for Driving While License Revoked/Suspended.
Animal at Large: Ongoing issue with neighbor’s black lab in his yard. Animal Control Officer is investigating this call.
Animal Protective Custody: An elderly black and white cocker spaniel was dropped off Friday in the front cages of the Animal Shelter. After being examined by the Vet it was determined that the animal was suffering from malnutrition and in poor health. Animal Control Officer is holding on AS6.16.050.
Traffic Hazard: A Semi hauling a mobile home caused a traffic hazard. An Officer responded and issued a warning. The individual stated they will have a tail car on the way back.
Traffic Complaint: A report of a blue mustang with white stripes blew past the caller, RV and another car. An Officer responded to the area but upon arrival the vehicle had left the scene and Officer was unable to locate it.
Possible Drunk Driver: A women called in to report her Ex had their 2 boys in a truck but was concerned that the he was on something or drunk. She was concerned about the welfare of the boys. An Officer responded and went to the residence but the vehicle was not in the area.

4-20-15 Valdez Hazmat team responded to an unknown odor at the National Guard Armory. There was no hazmat concern after investigation.
4-21-15 Valdez EMS assisted with a medivac request.
4-23-15 Valdez Hazmat team responded to investigate a possible hazardous odor at Hermon Hutchens Elementary school. After investigation no odor was found.
4-23-15 Valdez EMS responded to an individual needing medical assistance. The patient was treated at the scene and transported to Providence Valdez Medical Center.
4-23-15 Valdez EMS responded in assisting helicopter landing at the hospital for a medivac.
4-24-15 Valdez Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Hermon Hutchens Elementary school. The alarm was set off for a fire drill; no notification was given to the Fire Department.
4-24-15 Valdez EMS assisted with a medivac request.
4-25-15 Valdez Fire Department assisted with safety issues during a medivac at the helipad located at Providence Valdez Medical Center.
4-25-15 Valdez EMS responded to an individual who needed medical assistance.
4-25-15 Valdez Search & Rescue responded to an individual needing medical assistance. The patient was rescued, treated at the scene and transported to Providence Valdez Medical Center.
4-25-15 Valdez EMS assisted an agency with transferring a patient from the helicopter to the hospital.
4-26-15 Valdez EMS responded to and individual who needed medical attention. The patient was treated at the scene and transported to Providence Valdez Medical Center.
4-26-15 Valdez EMS assisted with a medivac request.
