PRESS RELEASE FOR THE WEEK OF October 6th – October 12th, 2014
Any charges reported in this press release are merely accusations and the Defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Animal At Large: A report of a black pug running loose in Aleutian Trailer Park, barking was received. Officers responded and chased the dog back to its residence.
Arrest: Lionel D. Veal, DOB 08/20/59, of Valdez was arrested for DUI and Reckless Driving.
Welfare Check: A report of a man who came into Mighty Mites with his two children and appeared to be “out of it” was received. Officers responded and determined the male was extremely tired.
Found Property: A wallet was turned into the Valdez Police Department. If you have lost your wallet please call the Police Department to claim.
Animal at Large: A small white poodle was found by the High School bus drop off. The Animal Control Officer located the dog’s residence and found the gate open. The dog was placed inside and the gate was shut.
Theft of Property: A report of property stolen from an apartment complex was received. Officers investigated and determined this to be a civil issue.
Civil Process: Divorce papers were served.
Civil Problem/Dispute: A male individual called to report he was having problems with his ex-girlfriend. She would not give him his car keys.
Problems with Neighbors: A complaint was received about having neighbor issues regarding property lines. Officers responded and got it figured out, civil issues.
Trespassing: A business requested assistance in removing an individual from their property. An Officer responded and trespassed the male subject from the business.
Stop FI: While on patrol, an Officer noticed some individuals by a dumpster burning something and blocking Chenega and Pioneer. All individuals were contacted.
Animal Impound: A yellow lab was impounded on West Egan.
Animal At Large: A black pug looking dog was barking at kids in the neighborhood in Aleutian. When an Officer responded, the dog was no longer in the area.
Lost Property: A report of two $100 bills, folded up nicely was reported lost between 8:30pm and 9:30pm on Sunday Oct 5th near Safeway. If found please turn into the Police Department.
Stop FI: Officers were waved down by a male individual having problems with his son. The son ran away and the father wanted help locating him. The Officer was able to locate the son and returned him home.
Animal At Large: A report of 2 dogs at large on Pioneer was received. An Officer responded but found no dogs running free in the area.
DUI: Will R. Wardlw II, DOB 11/08/81, of Valdez was arrested for DUI.
Citizen Assist: Request assistance in getting elderly mother from the garage to her chair lift. An Officer assisted getting the mother upstairs.
Animal Impound: A man reports a female pit bull mix at large. He has it in his vehicle and will drive it to the animal shelter. An Officer met him at the animal shelter to impound the dog.
Public Speaking/Appearance: An Officer completed a Winter Driving Presentation for USCG employees.
Summons/Citation: Jake S. Zastrow, DOB 6/7/85, of Valdez was summoned by citation for Failure to Stop for School Bus Red Light.
Public Speaking/Appearance: An Officer attended the AVV Candlelight Vigil.
Warrant Arrest: William R. Baird II, DOB 09/13/1982, of Valdez was arrested on an outstanding Valdez PD warrant for Failure to Comply with serving jail time. Subject was held to serve 20 days. Original charge: Trespassing.
Animal at Large: Report of a 40 lb black pug at large in Aleutian going in to houses and barking, chasing and scaring children. Officer responded but found no dog in the area.
Alarm – Burglar: A burglar alarm was activated at a downtown business. An Officer responded and investigated the scene and found nothing out of place. All the doors were secured and the alarm was reset.
Disturbance Bar: A report of an intoxicated male slamming his bottle into the countertop and was yelling profanities at personnel at a local bar was received. The individual left the bar before officers arrived.
Citizen Assist: An Officer was requested to assist in giving a man locked outside of his residence without a jacket a ride to Simmons Trailer Court. Officers responded and found a man waiting for cab and he was not outside without a jacket.
Welfare Check: Reports that his girlfriend left Glennallen at 0200 AM and has not arrived in Valdez yet. The person called back later to report that she made it to Valdez.
Animal at Large: A report of a dog at large in a parking lot of a local business was received. An Officer responded to the area but the dog had already left.
VID: A vehicle went into the ditch at approximately mile post 11 of the Richardson Highway causing some damage to the vehicle. Officer’s investigated and no further response was needed.
Animal at Large: A skinny black lab was reported at large in Robe River. Officer responded and no dogs were found to be at large.
Animal at Large: A dog was thought to be hit in the area of Meals and Bremner. Officers responded and returned the uninjured dog to the owner.
Animal Bite: A female individual was reported to have been bitten by a dog after breaking up a dog fight. The dog has been quarantined.
Agency Assistance: Valdez Police Department assisted the Alaska State Troopers with a prisoner transport from Tatitlek.
Traffic Hazard: A report of a large tent in the middle of Egan Drive was received. An Officer responded and removed the tent from the roadway.
Disturbance Noise: A complaint of loud music with bass from a parked vehicle at Safeway was reported. Officer responded and found no disturbance in the area.
Animal at Large: A report of a puppy following some girls home was called in. An Officer responded and returned the puppy to its owner.
Lost Property: An individual reported losing a Wells Fargo debit card in the Valdez area. If found please turn into the Valdez Police Department.
Stop FI: While on patrol, an Officer noticed a car with its doors open across from a downtown restaurant. Upon further investigation, two males were discovered camping in the car.

On Oct 6 at 8:36 am EMS personnel responded to a woman that was injured from a fall. The patient was treated on scene and transported to Providence Valdez for further treatment.
On Oct 7 at 7:45 am Fire personnel responded to dumpster fire near Subway. The fire had been started from ashes that had not been properly extinguished before disposing of in the dumpster. The responsible party was notified and advised to allow the ashes to sit for a couple days prior to disposal.
On Oct 7 at 8:38 am EMS personnel responded to a 911 call for lady that had fallen and could not get up. The patient assisted into her bed.
On Oct 7 at 9:05 pm EMS personnel assisted a lady from her garage to the main level of her home.
On Oct 8 at 10:54 am EMS personnel responded to an 86 year old female that needed help. The patient was treated on scene and transported to Providence Valdez for further treatment.
On Oct 9 at 12:11 pm EMS personnel responded to a man that was having a diabetic emergency. The patient was treated on scene and transported to Providence Valdez for further treatment.
On Oct 10 at 8:00 pm EMS personnel responded to the High School gym for a 12 year old female that had injured her ankle. The patient was treated on scene and transported to Providence Valdez for further treatment.
