The Lady Bucs wrapped up their tournament in the Anchorage with a 4th place finish over the Seward Seahawks. To lead the Buccaneers was Senior Rachel MacDonald with 11 points including three critical three pointers to keep the Lady Bucs with the lead for the entire game. Sophomore Maddy Fleming received the Player of the Game Award by acquiring nine points on four for seven shooting with four assists, four rebounds and two steals. Marian Wamsley got eight points and six rebounds and also shot 100% from the free throw line. Players Katy Merioles and Veronica Hursh also contributed to the victory both scoring 4 points each.

KVAK would like to personally congratulate Senior Rachel MacDonald on an outstanding basketball career. She showed skill and leadership as an athlete and we wish you all the best moving forward.

The Lady Bucs will head to Anchorage this weekend to compete in the State Basketball Tournament. The Bucs first game of the tournament will take place on Thursday, March 20th at 8am. See below for more information.

The Boys end the tournament with a 4th place finish. In the final day of the tournament the Bucs were set to play Hutchison in order to advance to the third and fourth place game later that day. The Buccaneers were able to keep the score relatively close through the first three quarters. Then late in the fourth the Hawks were able to pull away and get the victory. Senior Caj Rohrer led the Bucs by scoring 23 points, including 5 three-pointers. Next was Nathan Kuchin with 19. With that loss the boys team will not be advancing to the state tournament. Congratulations to the Seniors on the team; Caj Rohrer, Chris Mansfield, Brian Allen, and Walter Hogarth on their final season of High School Basketball.

The Girls finish 2nd overall in the Aurora Conference and will be going to the State Tournament in two weeks. After a tough loss on Friday the Lady Bucs look toward facing the Hutchison Hawks on Saturday. The Bucs answered that game with a dominant win to send them to State. The final score of the game was 51-36. Rachel MacDonald and Marian Wamsley led the way scoring 12 points each for the team. Katy Merioles also chipped in with 7. Sophomores Mesa Rohrer and Maddy Fleming both added to the scoreboard with 6.

This weekend the Valdez Bucs played Monroe and Eielson. In their Thursday games against Monroe the Valdez Girls took home a win 66-46 with Mesa Rohrer scoring a total of 17, while the Valdez boys lost to a heartbreaking score: 100-31. On Saturday against Eielson both Buccaneer teams walked away with loses, the girls 52 Eielson, 17 Valdez and the boys Eielson 57, Valdez 51.   The Bucs will play next in Cordova. KVAK could not get game times from VHS or Cordova High School Monday morning so, check the KVAK website for times.

The games started Thursday for the 37th annual Valdez Elks Tournament. Both of the Valdez Buccaneer teams faced off against Cordova Wolverines in their Thursday games, each walking away with a win, the girls 63 to 34 and the boys 57 to 51. On Friday the Buccaneer boys faced Barrow taking a hard loss 74 to 35. The girl’s team played a close game against Seward later that day but couldn’t pull ahead losing the game 46-40. On Saturday the Buccaneers finished the tournament strong, the girls picking up a win against Skyview 62-49. The Buccaneer boys did not win but played a painfully close game losing to a 3 point buzzer beater 63 to 62. Valdez players Caj Rohrer and Mariam Wamsley were honored at the close of the tournament, Rohrer making the Elks All Tourny Team and Wamsley receiving the tournament MVP award.   The Bucs will play later this week against Monroe and Eielson. KVAK will broadcast all Buccaneer Varsity Games LIVE this Weekend on 1230 AM

After weekend games in Seward the Bucs have returned to Valdez and are setting their sights on the upcoming Elks Tournament. This week’s tournament with be the 37th of its kind hosted in Valdez. A total of 7 teams are expected to attend including Nome, Seward, Hutchison, Kotzebue, Barrow, Skyview, and Cordova.

Both the boys and girls teams suffered tough loses Friday night in close games against the East Anchorage Thunderbirds and the Klawok Chieftains. The girls played and temporarily carried the lead but the Lady Thunderbirds had no intention of giving up the game. Both teams fought neck and neck with the Lady Bucs ultimately losing by only 2 points, final score 57-55. Next the Valdez boys took the court squaring off against Klawok. A hard game followed with the Chieftains breaking away with the lead in the final quarter winning the game 65-49.
In Saturday's games both teams face the Eagle River Wolves. The played a strong game and took the victory by a large margin with the final score 60-15 in favor of Valdez. The boys team did not fair quite as well playing a tough game with the Wolves. Although they kept the score close for 3 quarters the Wolves broke away in the 4th quarter finishing the game 73 Eagle River-53 Valdez. The Bucs will play again in the Elks Tournament coming up this weekend.
The Bucs are still scheduled to play tonight in Seward by we are getting reports from the court that their first game, scheduled to start at 6:15pm, has been pushed back and is expected to start around 7pm. The Valdez Bucs played a tough round of games against the Galena Hawks this weekend but were unable to secure a victory. On Friday both played close games with the girls losing 55-46 to Galena and the boys finishing in a loss 57 to 41. Saturday saw similar matchups with a final score for the boys at 59 Galena, 48 Valdez and Galena 48 Valdez33 for the girls. The Bucs will play next at the Seward invite starting this Thursday. The teams from Galena dominated in the first round of games this weekend with the Buc girls losing 55-Galena to 46-Valdez and the final score for the boys game 57-Galena, 41-Valdez. The Galena Hawks and The Valdez Buccaneers will face off again tomorrow starting with the boys game at 2pm and followed by the girls game at 3:30pm.

The basketball games against Monroe for tonight and Saturday have been cancelled due to road closures and hazardous roads resulting from avalanches and extreme weather conditions.

The Valdez Bucs played Hutchinson this weekend and coming home with some more wins under their belts. Both the girls and boys teams won their Friday games, the girls: 56 to 46 and the boys: 51 to Hutchison’s 48. On Saturday the girl’s team won again with a score of 38 to 31 while the boys lost their final game 48 to 57. Both teams will play again this Thursday against North Pole.

The Buccaneer basketball teams played Delta Thursday, January 9th with the girls winning their game 55 to 35. The Buccaneer boys played a tough game against Delta losing by only one point: 60-59.
The teams competed against Delta again the following night, January 10th with the boys losing 50 to 35 and the girls picking up another win 65 to 41. Catch the Bucs next weekend when they play Hutchison. See below for game times.

The Valdez Lady Bucs lost in overtime 66-57 to the Barrow Whalers.The games leading scorer was Rose Mangoyuck of Barrow with 23 points which includes 6 crucial points in overtime. To lead the Bucs Katy Merioles and Veronica Hursh both put in 13 points. Next was Rachel MacDonald who had twelve. Turnovers and a lack of rebounding caused the girls to give up 15 point lead at one point. By the fourth quarter the game was tied and Barrow capitalized and took the lead. Timely buckets from Katy Merioles, and Senior Rachel MacDonald put them back in the game but were able to pull it out in overtime.  The girls will conclude the tournament with a 4th place finish and the Boys ended with a 7th place finish in a massive victory over Tikigaq led by Senior Caj Rohrer. Both teams now look toward focusing on their upcoming home games against the Delta Junction Huskies.
