Valdez HS wrestlers were in Palmer for Lancer Smith Duals and Invitational this weekend. This is considered a premier event among the high school wrestling community due to the large number of wrestlers in attendance and also the reward of an elite jacket for first place finishers. There were 37 teams represented in the two day event. Palmer, the host, secured a 1st place team finish with 159.5 points. Valdez was the top 1-2-3A team with a total of 128 points for 6th place. Valdez also had 3 wrestlers with top placements. The wrestlers were 1st place Austin Rake(145) and Isaac Deaton(152), 2nd place was Davy Towne(120) and 3rd place Adam Downing(138).
The Thursday night duals pitted Valdez against two 4A schools, Palmer and West Valley. A breakdown of the duals are as follows. Dual 1 had Valdez(27) and West Valley(39). The wrestlers will have an open weekend for Thanksgiving. They will then travel to Eielson for the Denali Regional Conference tournament. This tournament will seat wrestlers for the state tournament in Nikiski. The Denali Region is allotted 2 wrestlers per weight class at the state meet. The regional meet will have a wrestle-back format where the loser of the 1st/2nd place match will wrestle the 3rd place finisher, only if the two have not wrestled in the tournament. The wrestler will retain the regional placing but the winner will secure the ability to advance onto the 1-2-3A state tournament.
