Valdez Fishing Report
17.10 SILVER CAUGHT FROM CITY DOCK, 2 ANGLERS CATCH ONE HALIBUT

VALDEZ – The fish are big in Valdez, but not big enough to beat 10-year-old Kelvin Cann of Fallon, Nevada. Cann hooked a 19.10 pound silver August 10th and despite the huge number of large fish coming to Port Valdez, no one has been able to knock him out of the top spot. The daily first and second place winners have been in the fifteen to seventeen pound range, but none have been big enough to displace the 2nd and 3rd place leaders either. In fact, Betty Valdes of Eagle River is still holding onto 3rd place with the 18.84 pound silver she caught in the Women’s Derby August 14th. And Chelsea Harrison of Valdez is still in 2nd place with the 18.96 pound silver she caught August 2nd.

Barbara LeGendre of Junction City, Oregon caught a 17.10 pound silver from the Valdez City Dock, but it only landed her 2nd place for the day August 28th as Brian Hull of Anchorage Alaska reeled in an 18.46 pound silver. Hull’s fish was big, but just shy of breaking into the overall standings.

While it seems that everything is working to catch the silvers this year, Pat Olson of Valdez said most anglers are fishing 15 to 40 feet deep and the color green seems to be working well. The majority of anglers are trolling at shallow depths and the fish are definitely into Port Valdez and moving onto Allison Point to end their journey at the Valdez Hatchery. With Big Prize Friday September 3rd and the end of the derby Sunday, September 5th there are still a few days of tremendous silver fishing left.

It looks like George Levasseur’s 363.9 pound halibut has a lock on the $15,000 first place prize in the Halibut Derby, but other anglers are fighting it out for weekly first and second place prizes. This week Amber Burton of Valdez and Robbie Bailor of H. Beach, California hooked the same 157.1 pound halibut aboard No Excuses and shared the weekly first place prize. Warren Woodland of Fairbanks, Alaska took the 2nd place weekly prize with a 127.4 pound flatfish he caught aboard the Bold Eagle.

Weigh-in for the last day of the derby Sunday, September 5th, will close at noon. At that time the winners will be tabulated, checks will be cut and derby organizers will prepare for the Spawn ‘til Dawn Derby Awards Party Sunday night. The Awards Celebration will feature Fish Olympic Games, presentation of the top 3 winners in the Halibut and Salmon Derbies and the Seekins Ford Truck Drawing. Everyone who purchases a derby ticket has an entry in the drawing to win the truck whether they caught a big fish or not. Those with season tickets have five entries. Admission to the Spawn ‘til Dawn Derby Awards party is free with a derby ticket. Derby tickets for admission or another chance to win can be purchased at the door.
