Boys Basketball Report

Courtesy of GMS Coaches – The GMS Huskies traveled to Glennallen this past weekend for the Great Pumpkin Buzzer Beater Tournament. On Friday the boys varsity suited up against Delta for their first game. Boys came out slow and sluggish but picked it up in the second half behind solid team play and defense and won 47-30 to set up a match up with Nome. In the next game against Nome the boys started out strong and it was a back and forth game. Nome started to pull away but the team held strong and fought their way back into the game. It was a nail biter in the end and botched scorekeeping, the boys ended falling 46-44.

On Saturday the boys varsity ended up playing delta again in a rematch with the winner going on to face Nome in the Championship game. The Boys came out strong and stayed in control for the whole game behind strong play from eighth graders Zach Holdbrook, David Boone, Rylen Labonte and Levi Wade. The boys ended up winning 42-21 setting up a rematch with Nome in the Championship game.
The Boys varsity were ready to exact revenge for the last game against Nome.  Nome came out firing on all cylinders and couldn’t miss a shot. Boys were trailing big 37-22 at half but came out of the second half strong and fought back to get within 7 but just couldn’t contain the Nome shooters. The GMS boys varsity ended up falling 56-40 and taking home second place. Zach Holbrook and David Boone took home all tournament honors. The GMS Huskies will travel to Delta next weekend.

Girls Basketball Report

Courtesy of GMS Coaches – This weekend was another hard-fighting weekend for the Lady Huskies A-team. We started off the weekend playing once again, the Glennallen Panthers. The teams started off slow with only a total of 9 points scored between the teams and ending the first quarter 2-7. The second quarter was tough for us defensively as we let a player score another 8 points against us to our 3. We came out stronger in the third quarter scoring 10 points and locking down their top scorer on defense, only allowing her to score 2 points. We ended the game going strong but unable to overcome the point deficit by the end of the fourth quarter.

Our next game on Saturday was against the Tri-Valley Warriors, a team we had not played against previously. It was a slow-building game with us barely trailing the Warriors by only a few buckets the whole game. We were able to get crucial points on fast breaks throughout the game, but their 2-3 zone defense prevented us from getting any more layups in our set offense. We kept it close throughout the 4th quarter and ended the game 14-18, with Tri-Valley winning the bout.

For their contributions to the team, Parker King and Aliya Valeriano represented the Lady Huskies on the All-Tournament team.
