The Buccaneer Girls kicked off their 2023-2024 Basketball season facing off against our cross the sound rival Cordova Wolverines. Despite being young and relatively smaller in size compared to the Cordova Wolverines our girls came out ready to play jumping out to a 17-1 first quarter lead Friday night. The Buccaneer girls press and speed continued to be too much for the Cordova Wolverines to handle as they extended their lead to 25-6 at the half and ending the game with an overall score of 53-23. Lola Compahos lead all scorers Friday night with 12 points, Destiny Day scored 11 points, Kelli Malcuit 10 points, Rylee Wade with 9 points and Izzy Kizer contributed 6 points.
Saturday night proved to be much like Friday night’s game with Valdez leading Cordova 15-2 in the first quarter and our press and transition game being too fast for the Wolverines to keep up with. The Valdez girls extended their lead to 23-13 at the half and ending with a final score of 54-29. Rylee Wade lead all scorers Saturday with 20 points, Destiny Day scored 16 points, Lola Compahos had 13 points and Kelli Malcuit contributed 4 points.
Really appreciate the opportunity to continue competing against the Cordova Wolverines even though they are no longer a part of our region. We have so much basketball history and tradition with them. Overall, it was a great couple of wins for our girls to start out our season. Hopefully we were able to work out some of those first game jitters and now we look forward to putting in the work to clean up our pressure defense as well as improve our rebounding skills. The Buccaneer girls will take a few days off to enjoy the holidays with family and then leave to participate in the Nome Subway Classic Tournament January 4th-6th.
