The Buccaneer football team took the field on a beautiful Saturday to take on the Monroe Catholic Rams and show the home crowd their progress from the first two weeks of practice. With 18 players, the Bucs have enjoyed solid practices and learned a lot so far, and it showed on Saturday. The scores came early and often with a 46-0 halftime tally. Due to the runaway score, the entire second half was run with a running clock. It was great to see senior leadership from Andrew Baczuk, Ezekiel James, Kedric Wallis, and Travis Ray directing and supporting the several lesser experienced players surrounding them.
This year, the 9-man football league consists of 4 teams, and each team will play each other twice in a home-and-away format. We will see Monroe Catholic again this year in Fairbanks in a few weeks and anticipate a good matchup then as they also gain a few players. This coming Saturday the Bucs will host the Seward Seahawks. Seward is a heavy favorite to win the league this year having beat NIkiski handily this past weekend. We anticipate the challenge and invite all to come support these hard-working youth.
