This past Saturday the Buccaneer football team traveled to Nikiski to take on the Bulldogs in gridiron action. Both teams entered the contest with 1-1 records on common opponents, winning over Monroe Catholic and losses to state favorite Seward.

Having played Seward last week, the Buccaneers weren’t entirely healthy with 2 starters sitting out this weekend. With the Buc’s limited experience, several players were forced to play out of their normal position in this game which proved crucial to success. The Bulldogs took advantage of miscues in the Buccaneer pass defense and quickly took control of the game. The Bucs responded early by driving and scoring a touchdown of their own, but were unable to effectively stop the bulldog offense. The Bucs added a second touchdown on a long pass from Andrew Baczuk to Merrick McCumby to bring their own score to 14. The final score of the game ended with a Buccaneer loss at 56- 14.

This week features a much-needed bye week. The Bucs look to get healthy and strengthen their depth this week, helping newer players gain skill and confidence.  The Bucs will see the Bulldogs again in the last game of the season, and likely the following week in playoffs. The next scheduled game for the Bucs, however, will be on the 14th in Fairbanks taking on the Monroe Catholic Rams. Thank you to all of our devoted fans who travel so far to cheer on their team. Your support is appreciated.
