The Buccaneers hosted the Nikiski Bulldogs in gridiron action this past weekend. As the last game of the regular season, it was a must-win game for the Buccaneers to extend their season into playoff opportunities. Having met the Bulldogs previously this year it was evident this would be a difficult task.

On the first kickoff of the game, the Buccaneers successfully recovered a squib kick resulting in good field position to score. A few short plays later, the drive was successful, and the Bucs took the early lead. Nikiski quickly responded with a scoring drive of their own. Focusing heavily on the formidable Bulldog running attack left vulnerabilities on the Buc pass defense. The Bulldogs were able to take advantage of a formidable offensive line, a tall quarterback with a good arm, and capable receivers.  While the Bucs would score once more in the second half, the strong, experienced Nikiski team handily won the game with a score of 54-14.

This would be the last football game for 4 seniors on the Valdez team, including Andrew Baczuk, Ezekiel James, Travis Ray, and Kedric Wallis. Their leadership and stellar play have been instrumental in helping the team consistently improve this year. They will be missed.

We would like to sincerely thank Mr. Wegner for his under-recognized service to VHS sports in general and football in particular. In addition, we are indebted to the mom squad for their hospitality show in selflessly feeding the visiting teams as well as the Bucs each week. We are very lucky to be on the receiving end of the selfless service of Rick King and Dennis Baron in helping these boys grow daily. As volunteers, they have given an enormous amount of time investing in the youth of today and leaders of tomorrow. Finally, a hearty thanks to all the parents who encourage their boys to participate in this program and their sacrifices in doing so. The courage these young men show each week in stepping onto the field is inspiring. As parents and a community, you can be very proud.
