VHS Students attend the Alaska Association of Student Government (AASG) Conference

Alaska Association of School Government (AASG) Fall Conference
October 11-13, Delta Junction High School

Courtesy of VHS Staff – Eight Valdez High School students  participated in the Alaska Association of Student Government (AASG) Conference held in Delta Junction over the weekend. AASG’s mission is to provide leadership training, communication, and a student voice of issues at the local, state and national levels. Romen Weber, Morgan Hamilton, Tristin Arnberg, Erik Vincent, Gray Odencrans, Oliver Ownbey, James Humphrey, and Jackson Vincent represented VHS at the weekend event, which included more than 30 schools from around the state.

While at AASG, students actively participate in debating and finding solutions to local, state, and national issues. The weekend’s debate included such diverse topics as school funding, teacher retention, and student privacy. Erik, Gray, Jackson, and Romen enjoyed debating in the group of 200+ students. All of our VHS students represented us well by listening, thinking, and asking thoughtful questions about important topics.

Erik Vincent also ran for AASG Region 3 Representative and was elected by his peers to take over as our region’s leader at future AASG conferences. His duties will include outreach to student councils to organize for future events and to encourage further involvement and leading conference meetings at future conferences.

It was not all work. The conference theme of Celebrating Community allowed Delta to showcase its community pride. Students were offered community exploration activities including tours of local farms, art workshops, or games on Fort Greeley. The Saturday night General Assembly session of debate ended the night with a conference wide dance and games where students networked and made friends with others from around the state.

The next AASG conference will be in Sitka, April 25-27, 2025.
