Boats float… until they don’t

Sinking boat in the Valdez Harbor

Snowfall and freezing temperatures in Valdez are the leading causes of boats sinking in the Valdez harbor. On average, three to five boats sink each winter season. When a boat sinks, the United States Coast Guard and Department of Environmental Conservation are often called in to assist with clean up and the often costly salvage operations fall to the owner of the impacted vessel.

VALDEZ – KVAK’s Laurie Prax interviewed USCG Lieutenant Alexander Henry and Mo Radotich of the DEC to find out what happens when a boat sinks in the Valdez Harbor. Henry provided tips to keep boats from sinking. Radotich shared information about what happens after the boat sinks and how DEC plays a role. CLICK to Listen
