Courtesy of VHS Coaches – After a quick turnaround this weekend our Bucs loaded up and headed to Sitka for a two game contest against the Sitka Wolves and two games with the Mt. Edgecumbe Lady Braves. Our first night we faced a very talented and very fast Mt. Edgecumbe team that we matched up very well against. Both teams are relatively small in size, play at a very fast pace and shoot the ball well from the outside. Near the end of regulation play the Lady Bucs found themselves down by 3 with seconds to go and the ball out of bounds underneath their own hoop. A perfect pass from Rylee Wade to Destiny Day who nailed a deep 3 put the Bucs into overtime with a score of 43-43 at the end of regulation. Riding off the energy of that clutch play the Bucs took to the floor in overtime play and controlled the remainder of the game. Des scored 2 more points giving us the lead and then the Bucs slowed the pace of the game and maintained possession for the rest of the game forcing Mt. Edgecumbe to foul and put us at the free throw line a couple times before time expired. At the end of over time the score was Lady Bucs 48 and Mt. Edgecumbe 43. Kelli Malcuit and Rylee Wade led all scorers with 13 points each, Destiny Day added 10 and Lola Compehos contributed 8 points.
The next two nights the Lady Bucs would face the Sitka Wolves. The Lady Bucs speed was too much for the Wolves to handle. The Bucs ended up beating the Wolves Thursday night 57-49 and Friday night with a score of 63-48. Lola Compehos led all scorers on Thursday with 17 points, Destiny Day added 16 points, Rylee Wade contributed 13 and Hali Fitka added 7. Friday night Rylee Wade led all scorers with 16 points, Destiny Day had 14 points, Lola Compehos contributed 13 points and Kelli Malcuit added 11.
Saturday night’s rematch against Mt. Edgecumbe was a struggle for the Bucs from the tip off. At the end of the first quarter the Bucs had dug themselves a pretty deep hole and found themselves down by a score of 21-6. Slowly the Bucs began to dig themselves out ending the half with a score of Mt. Edgecumbe 25 and the Bucs 19. As they continued to battle well into the 4th quarter the Lady Bucs would find themselves down by 10 and running out of time. The Bucs really began to hit their rhythm late in the 4th quarter playing relentless defense and a fast paced offense. They never stopped pushing their opponent and eventually wore the Lady Braves down with an impressive comeback posting a score of 48-43. Lola Compehos led all scorers on Saturday with 17, Destiny Day contributed 10, Hali Fika scored 8 and Rylee Wade had 7 points to end the weekend.
This team is learning and growing together every week. So rewarding to see the growth in these athletes…..the teamwork, the strides on defense, the selfless play, game management, the contributions from our bench players stepping up in tough situations…it’s all starting to come together for this group. Excited to see where this takes them this season.
In addition to some outstanding basketball this weekend the Bucs made the most of the amazing weather while we were in Sitka and toured the island. What a beautiful place and an awesome opportunity!!
