Courtesy of VHS Girls Basketball Coach – The Lady Bucs kicked off our Elks Tournament with a visit to HHES for our annual Pep Rally on Wednesday. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams ran thru warm ups, played games, and handed out basketballs and “Future Buccaneer” t-shirts at the elementary school. Such a great event sponsored by Copper Valley Telecom!
To begin our tournament play we faced our across the sound rival Cordova Wolverines on
Thursday night. The Lady Bucs’ speed and press was too much for the Wolverines to handle as the Bucs easily defeated Cordova by a score of 52-38. Lola Compehos led all scorers with 18 points, Rylee Wade had 14, Destiny Day added 12 and Kelli Malcuit contributed 6 points in Thursday’s win.
In Friday night’s game the Bucs would see a much tougher Barrow Whaler team…one of the top teams in the state. The Whalers proved to be an incredibly talented basketball team with their transition speed, size, ability to shoot the ball well and outstanding defense. Barrow quickly jumped out to a big lead and never looked back defeating the Bucs by a score of 71-33. Destiny Day led all Buccaneer scorers with 17 points, Hali Fitka and Kelli Malcuit each added 6. Unfortunately, the Bucs also lost Lola Compehos to an ankle injury as well as Kelli Malcuit to a knee injury early on in play which forced several of our younger players to step up against a tough opponent and they played very well for us. Very proud of the effort they all put into this game.
In their final game of the tournament the Lady Bucs would see the Lathrop Malemutes, a team we had played a close game with early on in the season. Although the Bucs kept the game close throughout we just couldn’t quite close the gap losing by a score of 38-48. Destiny Day led all scorers on Saturday with 15 points, Rylee Wade added 12, and both Hali Fitka and River Smelcer contributed 4.
We really would’ve liked to get the win in Saturday’s game, but overall it was a great tournament for us. Our team played well against some tough competition and our bench really came through with some solid play for us. We grew and got better this weekend. Hoping to get everyone back and healthy for our home conference games against the Hutchison Hawks this weekend.
