A large rock and mudslide took out a portion of the McCarthy Road on Saturday. On Sunday, additional sliding prompted Alaska Department of Transportation to close the McCarthy Road from 1.5 mile (just past Chitina) to Milepost 33 to both lanes of traffic.

Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilties crews are on site and plan to have one lane open by Tuesday morning for travel during the day. During daytime openings, traffic control will be present and drivers can expect 15-20 minute delays to cross the area. The road will be closed again nightly after 4:30pm on Tuesday.
